GRAPHIC DESIGN/PHOTOGRAPHY/PRINTING
Work with the students to take digital photographs of whatever interests them. Learn about layout and how to edit them on the computer to come up with an image to be printed onto a T-shirt using transfers.

BUILDING A WEBSITE FOR THE PROGRAM
Establish what the program would like their website to show. Work with the students to teach basic web design and programming skills and build the website. Organise hosting of the website with the coordinator. Ensure a plan for continued website updates is implemented.

MOSAICS
Explore mosaic assets with the students, working with them to decide on what to create – a small table-top, a mirror or picture frame, even a wall at their program (of course, this would be in consultation with the coordinator!). Investigate potential assets and techniques and create the mosaics together. Perhaps you could get the tiles donated by a local tile shop or TAFE college!

RADIOWAVES

Visit the DSF website for free resources for teaching students how to create radio programs. The program uses the freeware audio program, Audacity. The project with the students could include comprehensive technical training, interview techniques, and general media training. Conducted in conjunction with the local community radio station the students could even have their own radio program aired. Click here for more information.

MOVIE-MAKER
Have the students work together, or in small groups to create a documentary. It could be about someone famous, someone in their neighbourhood, their program or anything else. The project could include scriptwriting, editing, filming, lighting, storyboards, interviewing as well as learning about the film industry.

‘ACTING OUT’ – DRAMA
Go to a play (you might be able to arrange cheap tickets from a local theatre). Learn different acting techniques and scriptwriting techniques. Have an improvisation workshop. Make puppets and put on a puppet show for others. Have an actor come and talk to the students about the acting business.

GARDEN LIFE
Establish a community garden with the students. It could be a vege garden, a succulent garden etc.. Learn about different plants, seasons, landscaping. Also water conservation and how to look after the garden. You might be able to get the local nursery to donate some plants. Perhaps you could go on an excursion to the Botanical Gardens.

Or the Internet is always a great place to get you thinking.. try typing project ideas secondary students into a search engine..

With all projects it is important to do an accurate budget for all materials and equipment needed, and any ongoing costs to the organization (e.g. web hosting). The budget needs to be negotiated, and agreed to by the program.
